Euro 2012 Qualifiers: Slovenia Get Consolation Win Over Serbia

A 45th freak free kick goal from Dare Vrsic lifted Slovenia to a 1:0 (1:0) win over Serbia in the final round of qualifying for Euro 2012 in Maribor on Tuesday. Slovenia had no hope of qualifying for the tournament, but ruined Serbia's chances of advancing to the playoffs from group C.

Slovenia's first win over Serbia in the fifth meeting between the teams allows Estonia to progress to November's playoffs for the tournaments in Ukraine and Poland. The win is a consolation for Slovenia, which lost several key matches against teams ranked below it to fail to follow up its berth at the 2010 World Cup with a ticket to the Euro. While the slip-up had many analysts guessing about the future of Slovenia's manager Matjaz Kek, tonight's win may have tipped the scale in his favour.
